OUR SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENTS
ETR’s balance sheet is around EUR 210 million and we invest in almost all asset classes. We prefer consistently strong value creation measured by total shareholder return ("TSR"), which includes both dividends and capital appreciation.
ETR has also integrated sustainability into its investment strategy. This means that we are selecting our investments, based on how they generate long-term economic growth and bring social well-being without harming the environment.
ESG Principles
We will use the sustainability policy as an active tool to combat climate change while creating value to the owners. Our environment, social and governance (ESG) principles and primary requirements are based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and realized by concrete, measurable actions. ETR follows three principles when assessing the current and future investments. ETR will focus on investments that
1. are mitigating their negative impact on the environment
2. ensure equal and just working conditions
3. practice transparent and legitimate business processes
We divide our investments into the following four asset classes:
Liquid assets
These include not only cash but also listed equities and liquid fund units. We make extensive use of external managers and have a globally diversified portfolio. Our aim is always to have 30 - 40% of our capital in this asset class.
Alternative investments
We invest both directly in privately-held companies and in private equity funds. With direct investments, we aim to invest in equity but may consider some debt instruments. This asset class also includes other alternative investments such as hedge funds, forestry funds, loan funds, infrastructure funds and real estate funds. We expect an increase in investments in this asset class in the coming years.
Real estate
We own a industrial property in Vuosaari in East Helsinki, where our sister company the Paulig Group has offices and a coffee roastery.
At present we are satisfied with our real estate allocation and have no plans to increase our property investments significantly.
Strategic assets
This asset class includes investments of strategic importance to the Paulig family.
Some of our portfolio companies
Kanniston Leipomo
This wonderful little bakery was one of ETR’s first venture investments. Several years of hard work have now begun to show results: new stores have opened, and both sales and earnings have improved substantially. Kannisto is a modern and innovative food producer in which ETR has a 36% stake (assuming full conversion).
Heltti
This fastgrowing company focusing on occupational healthcare and wellbeing has established itself as a challenger within these fields. Heltti has introduced a new fixed-price model for occupational health, that encourages employee’s productivity and wellbeing. Heltti is also in the forefront regarding digitalization and online as well as remote activities. We own roughly 14 % of the company.
Nordaq Water Filter Systems AB
This Swedish water company supplies water filters to the HoReCa industry under the global brand FRESH. Its patented filter produces high-quality drinking water, still or sparkling, in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. For now, this is the only direct investment we have made outside Finland. Our stake is around 10%. Eduard Paulig is chairman.
